Two Women Bombers kill 38 on Moscow Metro
At least 38 people were killed in a rush hour attack on packed Moscow Metro trains, by two suicide bombers, both women on Monday, re-igniting fears of a renewed campaign in Russia by Islamists from the North Caucasus.
More than 70 others were injured, many grievously. Rescue workers said the death toll could rise. Explosives experts said the bombs were filled with bolts and iron rods.
There have been no immediate claims of responsibility. Federal Security Service (FSB) chief Alexander Bortnikov has said those responsible are linked to the North Caucasus, a heavily Muslim region where insurgency has been going on for over a decade, and the rebels have repeatedly threatened to attack cities and energy pipelines elsewhere in Russia.
